  1. 1898-1956. German dramatist and poet, who
  2. aimed to destroy the `suspension of
  3. disbelief' usual in the theatre and to
  4. express Marxist ideas. He adapted John Gay's
  5. Beggar's Opera as Die Dreigroschenoper/The
  6. Threepenny Opera 1928, set to music by Kurt
  7. Weill. Later plays include Mutter
  8. Courage/Mother Courage 194l, set during the
  9. Thirty Years' War, and Der kaukasische
  10. Kreidekreis/The Caucasian Chalk Circle 1949.
  11. As an anti-Nazi, he left Germany in 1933 for
  12. Scandinavia and the US. He became an Austrian
  13. citizen after World War II; in 1949 he
  14. established the Berliner Ensemble theatre
  15. group in East Germany.
